Police warn residents to keep belongings safe after spate of car thefts in Kilmarnock

Police have issued a warning to residents of Kilmarnock and the Irvine Valley to keep belongings in cars safe and out of sight following a spate of thefts.

Officers are also appealing for any witnesses after a number of incidents in Kilmarnock.

A theft of a motor vehicle at the top of the town took place on Friday, August 23 where contents including a mobile phone, sat-nav and contents of a wallet were taken.

Another theft on the same day saw tools worth a four-figure sum stolen from a car.

Police are carrying out enquiries and have called for witnesses after two further incidents last week.

Between 4pm on August 23 and 9.15am on August 25 on Wellington Street, Kilmarnock there were two attempted thefts of motor vehicles on Wellington Street.

Following the incidents, safer communities officer PC Craig Marshall said: “I would also encourage car owners to lock all items out of sight – don’t leave anything on display and take valuables with you.

“If you have a sat-nav, hide the cradle and take the system with you. Don’t forget to wipe the suction marks off the window.”

PC Marshall added: “If you have personal correspondence in the vehicle, take it with you. Don’t give others access to important personal information or your home address.

“Use an electronic or mechanical immobiliser such as a steering lock and if you have an alarm then make sure it’s set.”

Anyone with information should contact PC Wallace at Kilmarnock police office quoting reference number 0616/ 26.

Witnesses can also call police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
