Police warn public to stay away from street after blaze rips through building

A large blaze broke out at a convenience store in Motherwell on Sunday night.

Some homes in the area were left without water for a time as firefighters tackled the fire at a Spar shop in Merry Street in the Jerviston area of the town.

The street was closed off to allow the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to bring the flames under control.

Various road diversions remained in place on Monday morning and the public were asked to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said there was “no immediate danger to local residents”.

They also confirmed the road closure on Merry Street at its junctions with Jerviston Road and the A723 and asked members of the public to avoid the area and follow diversions that had been put in place.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water said the fire caused “an interruption to the water supply for customers in the Motherwell area” as the firefighters were drawing water from the network to tackle the blaze, causing a water outage in the area.
