Police warn public to 'avoid' Leeds city centre after suspected bomb found

Police have issued a warning to stay away from a large area of Leeds city centre near Granary Wharf after a device was found in the River Aire.

Magnet fishers pulled "a rusty metal object" out of the water earlier this afternoon (Wednesday) and called police.

Officers arrived a short time later and immediately evacuated the area. Bomb disposal teams from The Army are also at the scene.

Several roads in Leeds city centre have been cordoned off on both sides of the River Aire as the emergency services deal with the ongoing incident.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are currently dealing with an incident in Leeds City Centre where a rusty metal object was found in the river in Canal Wharf.

"A cordon is in place and the local area has been evacuated. The public are advised to avoid the area at this time."
