Police warn pet owners after tainted treats sicken Schaumburg dog

Nov. 12--A miniature schnauzer from Schaumburg got sick after eating a treat found in the backyard of its owners' home, police said Tuesday.

The 11-year-old male dog developed intestinal discomfort hours after its owners found the animal eating unknown treats in their backyard Monday morning in the first block of Stevens Drive in Schaumburg. The family reported the incident to police after finding several such treats in the backyard and after consulting with a veterinarian for the apparent illness.

Schaumburg police believe the tainted treats, which look like dog treats with something lodged inside, were intentionally placed. But it appears to be an isolated incident so far.

"Even though, we've only had this one single report, we're just reminding pet owners to watch and make sure they know what their dog is playing with," Sgt. John Nebl said.

The dog, meanwhile, continues to receive treatment. It's unknown what the illness is or if it could be fatal.

"We're not sure what the prognosis is," Nebl said. "You've got an older dog here, so that can play into it as well."

Arlington Heights Animal Hospital representatives confirmed they are treating the dog and posted a photo of the treats on the hospital's Facebook page.
