Police warn people attending mass gatherings 'will be in direct conflict' of Covid-19 regulations

Police have warned that anyone attending anti-lockdown gatherings at Belfast parks “will be in direct conflict” of Covid-19 regulations.

Flyers have appeared in UK cities urging all those against the Coronavirus Bill to “have some fun and say yes to life” at the ‘UK Freedom Movement’ events this weekend.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police are aware of social media posts encouraging mass gatherings in a number of parks.

“We strongly advise against anyone considering attending.

“Organising or attending any such gathering not only puts participants and those people using the parks at risk, but is in direct conflict with the Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) Regulations NI 2020.”

They also urged those behind the events to “to be responsible and cancel” them.

The spokesperson added: “While appropriate policing operations and resources will be in place, it is essential that we all respect the current guidance and regulations as we all share the responsibility to keep people safe during this global health emergency crisis.”

The events do not have permission from Belfast City Council.

But authorities have not yet taken the decision to close the facilities named.

A council spokesperson added: “We are aware of these posters and can confirm that permission has not been granted to host these events in our parks.

“We are liaising with the PSNI to address any issues which may arise.

“We continue to appeal to people to listen to the public health advice to stay at home and save lives. In line with public health guidance, our parks remain open but only to allow people living nearby to take daily exercise.

“It is absolutely vital that everyone observes strict social distancing at all times.

“All car parks within our parks and playing fields are also currently closed to discourage people from making non-essential journeys.”
