Police warn of man offering drugs before threatening people and demanding cash

Residents living in parts of south Manchester are being warned about a man approaching people and telling them he has a knife.

Police issued a warning after an increase in robbery offences over the last ten days, with reports saying a man was asking people if they want to buy marijuana before demanding cash.

The offender is described as black, in their late teens to early 20’s, of a slim build and wearing all dark clothing. Some reports also say he was on a bike.

The incidents, which occurred between 2pm and 9.30pm, happened in areas close to Hough End Leisure Centre.

Reported locations include Withington Tram Stop, Kingswood Road Ladybarn, Mauldeth Road close to Hassall Avenue, Withington Village, Talbot Road Ladybarn, and Nell Lane.

While the offender suggested he had a knife, there were no reports a weapon was seen or that any violence had been used.

In some cases, people were taken to the nearest ATM to withdraw cash.

A GMP spokesperson said on GMP Fallowfield, Withington, Levenshulme & Burnage Facebook page: “Please be mindful of your surroundings when out and about, and if someone starts speaking to you matching the description above, please have your wits about you.

“If you see anyone acting suspiciously, or indeed have had a similar experience and not reported it, please get in touch with us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact GMP on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
