Police warn it's illegal to harm or disturb bats as they begin to emerge for spring

Police Scotland are reminding the public that it is illegal to harm bats or disturb their roost as they begin to emerge for spring.

The force took to social media earlier today highlighting that the nocturnal creatures and their roosts are protected by law.

It is illegal to kill, injure, harass or disturb bats or damage their roosting place - whether this is deliberate or not. It is also an offence to "possess, sell or advertise a bat or any part of a bat".

The warning comes as bats are set to begin emerging from hibernation for spring.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: "In the coming months, as we enter spring, bats will be making their first appearance of the year as they emerge from hibernation and seek a safe, sheltered place to roost.

"Did you know all bat species in UK (and their roosts) are legally protected?

"It is illegal to kill, injure, harass or disturb bats or damage their roosting place, whether this is deliberate, reckless or even done through a lack of awareness."

Officers say people who should take particular notice are homeowners who have a bat roost in their property and woodland owners.

They add that it is also important to agriculturists and foresters, pest controllers, as well as planning officers, building surveyors, architects, property developers, demolition companies, builders and roofers, who may come into contact with bats.
