A man has died and others have been taken ill after they are believed to have taken drugs at a music festival.

South Yorkshire Police said they were called just after 9pm on Sunday to reports a man had been taken seriously ill at the Bassfest event at Don Valley Bowl in Sheffield.

The man, aged 20, from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire, was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

At the same time, a 23-year-old woman from Ipswich, Suffolk, was also taken ill and remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A spokesman for the force said: “Investigators are aware that several other people also presented to medical staff after becoming ill with symptoms consistent with having taken drugs.”

Police advised festivalgoers to check in on their friends and seek medical attention if they feel unwell.

The two-day festival featured acts including Chase & Status, Tion Wayne, Bad Boy Chiller Crew and Bru-C.

Anyone with information which may assist officers enquiries is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 993 of 18 July, or get in touch online.
