Police warn drivers to avoid Ayr works as traffic chaos brings cars to a standstill

Huge traffic delays are being reported in Ayr today as temporary lights continue to cause misery for drivers.

Works which are underway between the Whitletts roundabout and Heathfield retail park are the source of long queues.

The lights, which have been in place for the last few days, have been causing lengthy tailbacks in the area with a knock-on effect in the surrounding road network.

Police have now warned drivers to avoid the area if possible due to the build-up of Sunday traffic.

A tweet read: "Temporary traffic lights between the Whitletts roundabout and Heathfield retail park roundabout on Heathfield Road, Ayr are causing long queues, especially on the Whitletts roundabout.

"Traffic is busy in the area so please avoid the area or allow extra time for your journey."
