Police warn drivers about overloading vehicles after stopping packed car on M4

Police have warned drivers about the dangers of overloading vehicles after stopping a weighed-down car on the M4.

As well as a packed boot, the blue BMW had several bikes attached to the back of the car and items strapped to the roof.

Officers reported that the car also had hot rear tyres, describing the set-up as “a recipe for disaster”.

The occupants had been travelling to Kent but were ordered to remove excess cargo before continuing and had a traffic offence report issued.

Avon and Somerset Police's Roads Policing Unit said on Twitter in the early hours of Friday morning: “Overloaded? Yes, a little.

“Hot rear tyres and that weight in the car/on the roof a recipe for disaster.

“Loose tyres on bikes, barely enough room for driver. Vehicle stopped M4 Bristol en route to Kent.

“Journey over until excess cargo removed... TOR issued.”
