Police warn Bury residents of 'bogus official' crime spree

Police have issued a warning following a string of crimes involving 'bogus officials' across Bury

According to the GMP Bury South team, criminals in Prestwich and Tottington are posing as officials in order to gain access to homes.

In Prestwich, the offenders are allegedly claiming to be from a utility company.

Officers have said that one offender will keep the homeowner at the door, while other offender will burgle the home.

In Tottington, the 'bogus officials' are said to offer jet wash services or maintenance work.

Police said that the offenders are being 'quite insistent'.

It is not believed that the crimes in Tottington and Prestwich are linked.

A spokesman for GMP Bury South wrote on Facebook: "We have had numerous reports of male bogus officials working in the Bury area, especially in Prestwich and Tottington

"They have different methods of approach so we believe they are not linked and are two separate teams.

"Please be aware of persons calling at your address also make all vulnerable neighbours and relatives aware.

"If you suspect anything please ring the Police on 101 or Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111."

Earlier this week, a 'bogus fireman' also targeted Kung's Mini Market in Redvales.

The offender entered the shop and asked for access to the house at the back of the shop to check the premises was 'fire compliant'.

The owner refused but a neighbouring shop is said to have paid the men £300 for a 'fire inspection'.
