Police visit East Lothian shops after 'number of incidents' where youths were bought alcohol

Police in East Lothian say they've been visiting shops throughout Haddington after being made aware that large groups of underage youths were being bought drink.

Officers say they've been made aware of a "number of incidents" throughout the town where adults have purchased drink for young people. They fear this is contributing to a rise in anti-social behaviour.

As a result community cops will be visiting shops to remind shopkeepers and staff of their responsibilities.

East Lothian police shared news of the activity on social media, adding: "Community officers in Haddington have been made aware of a number of incidents where adults are purchasing alcohol for groups of underage youths in the area.

"This ultimately leads to incidents of antisocial behaviour.

"Local officers will be attending shops in the area to remind shopkeepers and staff of their responsibilities.

"It is a crime to purchase alcohol for anyone under the age of 18."
