Police vans line George Square as 'stop and search' crackdown continues

A police show of strength has continued today as dozens of vehicles lined George Square.

The move followed the extension of an order allowing them to stop and search individuals and vehicles following ugly scenes in the city centre last week.

This is issued when there is reason to believe serious violence may take place.

In a statement issued on Twitter this morning, Greater Glasgow Police said: "Following recent protests in  George Square, Police Scotland has today imposed an Order under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

"This allows police to search any individual or vehicle within the Greater Glasgow area until 23:59 tonight."

Police chiefs issued the same order yesterday in advance of a Stand Up To Racism rally in the square in support of UN World Refugee Day.

Just days earlier racist yobs targeted peaceful campaigners protesting against the eviciton of asylum seekers in Glasgow.

Six men were later arrested.
