Police urge parents to stay vigilant after 10 children reported missing on one day on North East beaches

Police are urging families to remain vigilant after 10 children were reported missing on North East beaches today.

Thousands are flocking to parks and the coast as the summer holidays get off to a scorching start.

But the busy locations have led to 10 reports of missing children today on beaches in South Tyneside and Sunderland .

All the children who disappeared have been reunited with their families but police have warned sun-seekers to keep an eye on youngsters on the busy coastlines.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Our parks and beaches are packed today as everyone makes the most of the sunshine but it has led to an increase in calls to police.

"We are a bit concerned that in South Tyneside and Sunderland we have had 10 reports of missing children today.

"Thankfully all 10 have been reunited with their families but it is all similar circumstances of children getting separated at the beach.

"With our coastlines very busy we want to remind people to look after each other and to keep young children close by.

"These jobs are always horrible experiences for families and we are always happy to help but it has taken up a lot of time today so please remain vigilant.

"Of course if you see a young child alone, or in a distressed state, then we would always encourage you to give us a call on 101."
