Newcastle's police commander is urging patrons and licensees at the city's pubs, clubs and bars to keep COVID-19 safety in mind ahead of today's Melbourne Cup festivities.
Punters are expected to descend on licensed venues this afternoon for the annual race-that-stops-the-nation.
Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said police would be highly visible in the city centre and suburbs targeting alcohol-fueled violence and anti-social behaviour.
"Due to current Public Health Orders, all venues must have a COVID-Safety plan in place - with capped numbers and social distancing requirements enforced," he said.
"Police will conduct business inspections and compliance checks throughout the district to ensure patrons are enjoying their cup celebrations in a safe environment.
"It's also a reminder for licensees to check that their COVID-Safety plans are up-to-date and to adhere to all relevant rules and restrictions."
