Renfrewshire police upping patrols after woman, 41, is sexually assaulted on cycle path

Police are going to be conducting extra patrols in the Brookfield area following a serious sexual assault on a cycle path.

A 41-year-old woman was walking along the National Cycle Route 75 between Linwood and Bridge of Weir when she was attacked by a man.

It is thought the man then walked off in the direction of Linwood.

The woman attended the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley for treatment as a result.

Renfrewshire police have said they will put extra officers on the ground as the assailant remains at large.

After being informed of the incident on Tuesday, December 27, officers taped off a portion of the cycle route between Sandholes Road and Brookfield Village Park, with officers stationed at entrances to the route throughout yesterday.

Police have appealed for information regarding the incident which happened between 10pm and 11pm on Wednesday, December 21.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have information that can help police is asked to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, aged in his 20s and with dark wavy hair. Police say that he may also have an injury to his face.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark McLennan said: “The woman was left understandably shaken by this incident.

“Our enquiries are at an early stage and I am appealing to anyone who recognises the description of the man to get in touch.

“Additionally, I would ask anyone who was in the area around that time and who may have seen someone fitting the description before or after the incident to come forward."

Deputy Area Commander, Inspector Alex Marshall, sought to assure the public that police are working to ensure the safety of people in the area.
