Police update on suspicious package found near Beeston school after bomb squad called in

An update has been issued after a bomb squad was called to reports of a “suspicious package” was found near a Leeds school.

Yesterday (Monday) at 2.01pm, West Yorkshire Police were called to reports that a “possible explosive device” was found in Barkly Road, Beeston.

The bomb squad attended to the scene and a large police cordon was placed, and Old Lane had to be closed in both directions between Jessamine Avenue and Barkly Road. Homes near the scene were also evacuated.

Now police have confirmed the item was removed and was found to be 'nothing of concern'.

A spokesperson for the force said: “At 2.01pm yesterday, officers were called to a report of a possible explosive device being found at an address in Barkly Road, Beeston, Leeds.

“A 100m cordon was put in place and homes within that area were evacuated while officers liaised with Army bomb disposal experts.

“The item was subsequently found to be nothing of concern and the cordons were removed shortly before 11:30pm.

“We would like to thank everyone affected for their patience during this disruption, which was necessary for public safety.”
