Police update on people who 'fled' caravan fire off the M32

Police are no longer investigating a St Werburghs fire which destroyed a caravan off the M32.

Two fire engines, two police cars and an ambulance attended New Gatton Road after a caravan went up in flames at around 3pm on February 23.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said at the time: "The two occupants of the caravan - a man and woman - are believed to have had a disagreement.

"They fled from the caravan. There was concern about the fire because of gas cylinders in the caravan."

Now the force spokesman has confirmed police are no longer looking for the pair.

He said: "The fire service has confirmed it is not regarding the incident as suspicious.

"No criminal offences have been disclosed. The log has been closed."

No one was hurt in the fire, which was extinguished before 3.30pm. Only a blackened shell remained of the caravan which caught fire.

The graffiti on the fence running along New Gatton Road previously read "System Change Now", but a burn on the fence has obscured the lettering.

The road's caravan community is at the centre of a long-running row involving local businesses, we reported earlier this month .

Business owners have complained the caravans are illegally parked, alleging drug use and antisocial behaviour have plagued the road since the vehicles have been there.
