Police update on BMW driver who 'crashed into house like a tank'

A man arrested at the scene of a car crash which left seven people homeless earlier this month remains released under investigation as inquiries into what happened continue.

The driver of a BMW was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, but has not yet been charged with any offences, a spokesperson for the police confirmed today (February 18).

The crash happened on February 7 in St John's Road, Bedminster - just south of the car park entrance to Asda.

The BMW left a trail of destruction over around 70 yards along a pavement, through two gardens, a breeze block wall and a back yard before hitting the back of a house on the corner of Brook Road and St John's Road with such force the entire back of the building may need to be reconstructed.

Bristol Live has learned seven people were living in the house, which had been converted into two flats, and all were left homeless following the crash, as the building is unsafe.

The car was embedded in the back of the kitchen and bathroom of the building for several days, and it will be many months before the building is habitable again.

The 29-year-old, who has not been named by police, could face a number of different charges, but at present has not been charged with any offence.

A day after the crash, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police said: "A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving following a road traffic collision in which a car collided with a house in St John’s Road at approximately 11.25pm last night,” he said.

“The man has since been released under investigation and enquiries into the incident are ongoing,” he added.

Now, 12 days after the crash, a police spokesperson added: "He remains released under investigation while enquiries continue."
