Police update as man on 'wrong side of the railings' of Armley bridge shuts major road

Police have issued a statement after a man was seen on the "wrong side of the railings" on bridge in Armley.

Police were called to the incident on Canal Street, in Armley, where a man was on the wrong side of the railings of a footbridge over the road, at 7.40am this morning (September 17).

Emergency services attended the scene and a road closure was put in place while officers engaged with the man to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed the man was brought to safety shortly after 9am and the road was reopened.

At least three fire engines and two ambulance vehicles were seen attending the scene as well as the police.

The road closure caused traffic chaos along Armley Road and Stanningley Road, with the road into Leeds through Armley at a standstill.

Huge queues went from the Armley Gyratory back to near Stanningley Bypass.
