The teenage male rider was removed via air ambulance and was taken to hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries to his leg.

The driver failed to stop at the scene and an investigation is underway.

Merseyside Police is appealing for any witnesses, CCTV and dash camera footage which may assist the investigation.

Hoylake Road, Ilchester Road and Stanley Road were closed while the incident was dealt with, and drivers were advised to find an alternative route.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information which could assist the investigation, is asked to call the Matrix Roads Policing Unit on (0151) 777 1530 or contact @MerPolCC on Twitter or Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook quoting reference 0338 of 25 December."
