A man who was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after crashing into a telephone pole has been released under investigation.

The pole was uprooted from the ground following the collision, which took place in Southmead Road at around 6.15pm on Saturday evening (June 1).

The driver reportedly smashed into the telecommunications pole, before coming off the road and hitting a wall.

Emergency services were called to the scene and Southmead Road was closed between Pen Park Road and BAWA Leisure Centre.

According to an Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson, the driver was reported to have attempted to leave the scene before members of the public detained him.

The spokesperson said on Saturday (June 1): “Police were called to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Southmead Road just before 6.15pm on Saturday (June 1).

“A car had collided with a telecoms pole. The driver was reported to have attempted to leave the scene and to have been detained by members of the public.

“Officers arrested a man on suspicion of drink-driving just after 6.30pm.

“He was taken to hospital for medical assessment and any necessary treatment following the collision.”

A police spokesman confirmed today (June 3) the man had been released under investigation.
