Police uncover huge cannabis farm at city centre warehouse

Police have uncovered a huge cannabis farm in a warehouse in Manchester city centre.

Officers were called to the unit on Heyrod Street, just behind Piccadilly train station, at around 5.30am this morning (Monday).

Initial reports came in that 'several bags of suspected drugs' had been found.

Inside the building, police discovered a 'large-scale cannabis farm'.

There were around 3,000 to 4,000 plants inside, GMP said.

The scene and building is now being 'made safe' and enquiries are ongoing.

A picture taken from a nearby building this morning showed at least four police vehicles outside the warehouse.

Three cars and one van were stationed in front of what looked like an open shutter to a building.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "Police were called to a warehouse on Heyrod Street, Manchester, at about 5.30am on Monday 12 April 2021 to reports several bags of suspected drugs had been found.

"On entering the building, officers discovered a what they believe to be a 'large-scale cannabis farm' containing an estimated 3,000-4,000 plants."

Detective Inspector Geoffrey Machent added: "We are processing the scene and making the building safe, and enquiries are ongoing."
