Police conducting a search warrant on a Taylor residence on Friday found a .22 calibre Winchester semi-automatic rifle under the bed and "thousands of rounds" of ammunition in a locked storage unit belonging to a next-door neighbour.
Facing the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday was 26-year-old Matthew Jenkins, who was sitting on the bed when police arrived at the Taylor unit to execute the warrant. The rifle was seized for forensic examination.
In a statement of facts tendered to the court, police alleged Jenkins had agreed to pay his next-door neighbour for the use of the storage unit but had not honoured the agreement and bolted it shut, denying his neighbour access.
Consent was given for a search of the storage unit, which turned up four boxes of .22 calibre ammunition.
Also seized in evidence during the warrant was $548 in one dollar coins in a backpack, and $854 in one and two dollar coins in a white string bag.
Police allege the coins to be the proceeds of crime, withdrawn from a Queanbeyan car wash coin machine using a credit card stolen from a parked car in Reid last weekend. A large amount of property, suspected to be stolen, was also found at the home.
When taken to the ACT Watch House, Jenkins was found in possession of a small quantity of a substance suspected to be methamphetamine. He was bailed with strict conditions, to appear again on multiple charges on March 22.
