Police to patrol anti-social trouble spots in Newcastle as temperature rises over the weekend

Police will be patrolling anti-social hotspots in Throckley and Westerhope over the weekend as the weather heats up.

Dispersal orders have been put in place around Orchard Terrace in Throckley and near the golf course in Westerhope to stop groups gathering there over the next 48 hours.

Neighbours in the area have raised concerns with the police about anti-social behaviour, which often increases in sunny summer weather.

The North East has been basking in sunshine over the last few days with temperatures shooting up to 26C on Saturday.

A dispersal order means the police can ask groups to leave a specified area and failure to comply is a criminal offence.

Sergeant Ashley Palmer, of the Newcastle North Neighbourhood Policing Team , said: "We have two dispersal notices in place for the next 48 hours, one in Throckley and another in Westerhope in the area near the golf course.

"We know that the sunny weather often sees an increase in anti-social behaviour.

"We want young people to enjoy the sunshine but they have to do that in a responsible manner and respect the wider community.

"Dispersal notices give us the power to move on large groups who gather in the area the notice covers so we can prevent any disorder from taking place.

"Hopefully we don’t need to use any of these powers but I want to reassure residents in the area that we will have officers on patrol will move on anyone believed to be involved in anti-social behaviour."

Anyone concerned by anti-social behaviour can talk to police by calling 101 or by reporting online via the website  www.northumbriapolice.co.uk .
