Police to look into the possibility of bringing cardboard cop cars to Nottingham

Cardboard cop cars could be making their way to Nottingham to reduce crime and slow down speeding drivers.

Police officers covering the Arboretum asked the public for their views on bringing the cars to Nottingham over their Twitter account.

Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping said it was "an interesting idea" and the force would be looking at their effectiveness.

Nottinghamshire Police already use cardboard police officers in shops and public buildings to stop would-be thieves.

The new addition would help prevent vehicle crime and speeding motorists.

Officers covering the Arboretum said: "You have probably seen the cardboard cut outs that we have used over the years of police officers in shops and other key locations.

"We have had the (cardboard car) pictures shared with us from Turkey.

"They even have lights that flash too and we were told productive in slowing drivers down and they are often seen along with real police cars that have police officers in."

Chief Constable Craig Guildford from Nottinghamshire Police, said: "It is an interesting idea but I would have to see the evidence first to be convinced.

"I do like the cut out coppers. I do think they work."

He said that putting them in public buildings makes defendants think twice about committing the crime. "It is about second thoughts" he added.

Mr Tipping said: "People are positive about cut out coppers. They have a laugh at them but they are effective. The cardboard cars are an interesting idea and we will have a look at them."

"We do need to think through what we are doing, the pattern of crime has changed fundamentally so we have to keep our resources under review."
