Police to dig up parts of Queensland dump in fresh Rachel Antonio search

Police will visit a north Queensland dump site to determine whether a fresh search would uncover vital clues into the disappearance of teenager Rachel Antonio.

Queensland police have been exploring the possibility of searching the Bowen refuse site — a site that was not searched when Rachel disappeared on Anzac Day in 1998, aged 16.

Ms Antonio's family have always wanted the tip searched for her remains but police said it was not viable.

That was until recently when they received new information about the layout of the tip at the time of Rachel's disappearance.

A coronial inquest last year found Rachel had most likely been killed by her boyfriend at the time, Robert Hytch, and her body disposed of at an unknown location.

Detective Inspector Nikki Colfs said 10 officers would be involved in the single-day examination of the tip.

Heavy machinery will be used to access waste layers down to 1998 levels, the same period when the 16-year-old went missing.

"We will endeavour to undertake a scientific evaluation of the refuse and the environmental conditions that were present in 1998," she said.

Police have not received any new information on the schoolgirl's disappearance.
