Police to carry out controlled explosion on grenade found in canal by people magnet fishing

Police are due to carry out a controlled explosion on a grenade found by people magnet fishing.

Officers have confirmed that a grenade, discovered yesterday in a canal near Higher Green Lane in Astley, will be detonated this morning.

The cordon is expected to lift soon afterwards, according to police from GMP's Leigh, Atherton and Hindley neighbourhood team.

Police were called at around 4pm following the finding and closed off the road and footpath.

The incident marks the second time in three weeks that a grenade has been found in the Wigan borough.

On January 18, an eight-year-old boy found a grenade in the River Douglas, in Shevington, while also magnet fishing.

"Officers would like to thank local residents for their cooperation," added the team in a tweet.
