Police Scotland are to be probed over the handling of the tragic Jamie Cannon case.
The Saltcoats teenager was found dead on February 26 this year after being missing for almost nine months.
Jamie, aged 19 at the time of his disappearance, went missing in May 2021 and his body was found in the Ardeer area of Stevenston, a short distance from where he lived.
Following the tragic find, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) referred cops to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).
Now the police watchdog will look into the handling of the case with the results of the investigation submitted to the Crown Office.
A statement from the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner on March 28 reads: "The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has instructed us to investigate the circumstances of the death of a 20-year-old man from North Ayrshire whose body was discovered near Ardeer on Saturday, February 26, 2022.
"At the conclusion of our investigation a report will be sent to COPFS."
A memorial event was held in honour of Jamie in March.
Close to one hundred mourners gathered at Auchenharvie Golf Course in Stevenston to release balloons in Jamie's honour.
Many of those paying tribute wore Celtic tops and released green, white, yellow and gold balloons into the sky.
One huge balloon read: "Jamie, sleep tight".
Close to £5,500 was raised to help pay for Jamie's funeral.
