The numbers associated with what kept police on their toes during Newcastle's Supercars weekend indicate exceptional behaviour across the community given the influx of people in the city for the event, the northern NSW police commander says.
Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell told reporters on Monday there were six people allegedly caught drink-driving out of more than 900 random breath tests conducted in Newcastle at the weekend, while highway patrol officers handed out about 100 tickets for speeding, mobile phone and seatbelt offences.
"But again, those sort of numbers are very, very low considering the amount of patrons who have come into the city," he said.

The arrest of four men in Watt Street following a confrontation with police on Saturday afternoon remained the most notable among what Assistant Commissioner Mitchell called "a few minor incidents".
Each of the men was charged with a range of offences including drinking liquor in a ticketed area, offensive behaviour, using offensive language and resisting arrest. They will face court in December.
"Overall, the crowd I think was in excess of 150,000 over the three days," Assistant Commissioner Mitchell said.
"They were very respectful, very well behaved - only a few minor incidents. Of course alcohol is always the ingredient that causes some of these problems. But I must say, when we look at the crowd numbers that have come to this event and the outcome it is extremely pleasing."
