Police thank demonstrators as hundreds gather in George Square

Police Scotland's Chief Superintendent thanked all protesters for all their 'co-operation with officers so far' as a raft of demonstrations have taken place in the city centre today.

Hundreds gathered to take part in a socially distanced Scottish independence demonstration in George Square, while others gathered at the other side of the square for a pro-Union demonstration.

At the same time was a demonstration against Home Office dawn raids.

There was a heavy police presence throughout the day, and Glasgow Live understands there have been no issues, no arrests and no enforcement actions - such as FPNs issued as a result of the demonstrations.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland said: “We understand people want to make their voices heard and we have been policing today’s demonstrations in George Square appropriately.

"I’d like to thank those in attendance for their co-operation with officers so far. I also want to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to take personal responsibility and use outdoor spaces safely and respectfully, with various restrictions still in place.”

Static protests and demonstrations are permitted under the Scottish Government's level three restrictions. More info here.
