A tweet by the force’s roads policing team said “popping out for a spliff was clearly not an essential journey”.

It also described how the officers performed a drug swipe on the driver at the scene which came back positive.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police said: "An 18-year-old man was arrested just after 12.20am on Monday, April 13 after patrolling officers stopped a car on the A371 in Weston-Super-Mare.

"The man was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink and drugs and later released under investigation pending further enquiries."
