Police: Teen loses 2 fingers with homemade explosive

HARTFORD, Conn. _ A teenager lost two fingers while handling an explosive device made of household items, Hartford police said Sunday.

The 16-year-old boy was not identified.

The device was no larger than a golf ball and appears to have been made with "common household products," police said.

The incident occurred on Gray Street.

Lt. Paul Cicero of the Hartford Police Department said the investigation "seems to point in the direction of the juvenile not knowing what he was manipulating" and was not involved in making the device.

The Hartford police bomb squad is helping to investigate.
