Police take action following spate of car thefts in Wishaw

Police will be carrying out extra vehicle checks following a recent spike in the number of car thefts.

Area Commander, Chief Inspector Mark Leonard also confirmed to the Wishaw Press that extra plain clothed and uniformed officers have been deployed to reassure the public following a number of cars being stolen over the past few weeks.

Chief Inspector Leonard said: “Following a number of reports into theft by housebreakings and car thefts, we will be increasing the number of vehicles searched across the Motherwell, Wishaw and Bellshill area.

I would ask for the public’s patience while officers are carrying out these searches.

“These will be carried out at several strategic points across the area.”

A string of car thefts have been highlighted in this newspaper over the past few weeks.

We revealed that a Cambusnethan couple have been left traumatised after callous thieves broke into their home whilst they slept.

The crooks snatched the car keys from the house and got away with two black Volkswagen Polos.

Last week, police appealed for information after fter a number of cars were stolen from a showroom in Wishaw.

The RJ&C King showroom was targeted by crooks on Sunday, April 7, with 12 cars being nicked.

Wishaw Community Council secretary Alan Love also told us how his car had been stolen from outside Wishaw Orange Halls on April 8.

CCTV footage from the halls picked up a white van going past several times before stopping and one man getting out and stealing the Vauxhall Astra.

Chief Inspector Leonard added: “Our advice continues to be that if any member of the public sees anything suspicious they should contact police immediately.”
