Police swoop to break up mass gathering in Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow

Crowds of ‘ covidiots ’ have again flocked to Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park on Thursday -  breaking strict social distancing rules.

Dozens of boozy punters took advantage of one of the hottest days of the year to meet up in the city centre greenspace.

Photos and videos showed huge groups mixing and drinking together without a care in the world.

Teams of police officers were pictured moving in to break up groups, check IDs and confiscate drink from the revellers.

As deadly coronavirus continues to grip Scotland, the Government's phase two rules state that three households can meet up outdoors, while keeping two metres apart.

Locals took to Twitter to vent their frustration at the large groups breaking the lockdown rules.

Dominika Kovacova wrote: "At least a dozen police cars/vans racing towards Kelvingrove in the past few minutes and still more coming, and a helicopter above the park. Lockdown going great.

While others, like a Twitter user called Hannah, described getting kicked out of the park.

She wrote: "We all getting kicked put(sic) the kelvingrove lol. im making a flower crown beside the pond and WE all gotta leave lol."

Scotland's coronavirus death toll sits at 2,482 with the deadly bug claiming the lives of two more people overnight.

Commenting on the mass gathering in the park, Inspector Lesley Docherty at Partick Police Office, said: “The regulations remain that people should only leave the house for very limited purposes, for example for basic necessities, for exercise or recreation, for medical needs or travelling for work which cannot be done from home.

"The Chief Constable has made it clear that we are asking people to take personal responsibility to do the right thing and remember the purpose of these measures is to aid the collective effort to stay safe, protect others and save lives by preventing the virus from spreading.

"Our officers will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance and encourage compliance. We will use enforcement as a last resort only where there is a clear breach of the legislation."
