Edinburgh police swoop on Portobello amid reports of youths wreaking havoc in High Street

A number of police vehicles rushed to Portobello on Friday evening after reports of antisocial behaviour.

In recent weeks, the area surrounding the High Street and promenade has become a popular spot for large gatherings of youths, with a series of incidents having to be broken up.

This week has appeared to be no different, after warmer weather attracted higher numbers to the coastal spot.

However, events appear to have turned sour after a huge police presence was seen on the High Street, arriving at around 7pm on Friday (April 23).

Eyewitnesses at the scene stated that a number of dogs were also present alongside officers, with four riot vans and other police cars also pictured outside Portobello Police Station.

One local at the scene described the situation as a "sheer disgrace", and stated that large groups of youths have been "taking over the beach" during lockdown.

The incident comes just days after a mass brawl occurred on a bus in the area, with an eyewitness reporting around 30 youths to have been involved.

Bus services were promptly diverted from the area on April 19 due to the disturbance, with one resident commenting that they no longer felt safe in the area.

Edinburgh Live contacted Police Scotland for comment.
