Police officers swooped on Leicester Square during this morning's rush hour amid reports of an armed man.

Witnesses reported seeing police ‘shove a man’ to the ground as they made an arrest in Leicester Square this morning.

Officers said they were called to reports of a man with a firearm at about 8.40am.

Scotland Yard said the incident is “not being treated as terror-related” and the man remains in custody.

A member of the public reported seeing a "man holding a gun" to unarmed police officers, before armed enforcements attended.

The gun, police said, was an inimitation firearm.

In a statement, police said: “Police Police in Leicester Square were flagged down by a member of public at about 08:40am this morning to reports of a man believed to be in possession of a firearm. He was arrested & remains in custody.

“Not being treated as terror related. No injuries reported. Enquiries continue.”

Luke Mears, who claims to have witnessed the arrest, said: “Just seen armed police threatening to shoot a man at Leicester Square.

"They’ve shoved him to the ground and have their guns pointed at his head. Everyone else is carrying on as usual.”
