Police swoop as huge crowds pictured flocking to illegal 'quarantine' raves

Huge crowds of revellers were pictured breaking the lockdown rules as they flocked to illegal 'quarantine raves' on Saturday night.

In Trafford, Manchester, young people were seen dressed in party gear as they made their way to a rave in Carrington.

And a Snapchat video shows a sea of people dancing together at a separate event at Daisy Nook Park in Failsworth, Oldham.

There were 'huge' police scenes at both illegal raves with paramedics also in attendance.

At the rave in Carrington, police could be seen on their radios as a steady stream of young people walk edalong the road in large groups - appearing to meet outdoors in far great numbers than the maximum of six as advised by the government during the pandemic.

The event was a huge drain on police resources, with some witnesses reporting around 50 emergency vehicles on Mile Road in Flixton at around 9.30pm.

According to witnesses, the rave appeared to be around the water treatment centre in front of the paper mill.

One person claimed there were 'thousands' of people in attendance.

There have also been multiple reports of a stabbing in the area, though these have not been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police.

A witness, who asked not be named, said: "There's something massive going on.

"Huge police presence, and at least 50 or 60 cars all parked up. Roads blocked off, and about 100 people walking away from the scene."

Meanwhile, it's been reported there were thousands in attendance at the rave at Daisy Nook.

MP Angela Rayner said she was out with a charity in Oldham 'dealing with the illegal rave' at Daisy Nook.

She later posted on Twitter: "Those who attended put themselves and their loved ones at risk. Compeltely irresponsible.

"A lot of effort went into online events this weekend across Greater Manchester to stop this sort of stupidity.

"Those who attended should be ashamed of themselves. My local area now has to deal with the aftermath."

Mass gatherings remain illegal as the country begins to emerge from strict coronavirus lockdown measures.

One woman wrote on Facebook: "Every selfish person who went to this last night should be ashamed.

"Stupidity, inconsiderate idiots."

Another posted: "Absolutely disgusted at the Quarantine Rave in Daisy Nook last night. Everyone who attended should be ashamed of themselves."

Somebody else posted: "Absolutely ridiculous. Imagine going to a 'rave' in the middle of such a horrendous pandemic."

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.

Shocking pictures showed the aftermath of the rave at the Oldham beauty spot with empty bottles, gas canisters and hundreds of plastic bags left strewn across the park.

Meanwhile, hundreds also gathered at another illegal rave in Leeds.

West Yorkshire Police were alerted to a huge gathering near a motorway bridge and were shocked to discover hundreds of young people dressed up in party gear dancing inside a crammed concrete tunnel dancing to rave music.

The partygoers weren't wearing masks and were reportedly filmed chanting "f*** the police" before officers broke up the rave shortly before midnight.

The motorway was closed for three hours as disgruntled teens walked home with one heard saying: “We got shut down. We got shut down.” Another was heard singing: “Lockdown. Lockdown.”

Shortly afterwards fights broke out at a service station on the side of the M1 at junction 45.

Police had to separate a group of men who were brawling as girls looked on.

One local said: “They were all young people – fed up and bored so they don’t care anymore. I can't believe they would be so stupid and selfish. They should fine every one of them.

"They obviously don’t care about catching the virus and giving it to their parents or grandparents.”
