Police 'swarm' Victoria Park after report of man with sledgehammer

A walker was asked to "keep her wits about her" following a report of a man with a sledgehammer in a Bristol park.

An eyewitness said officers from Avon and Somerset Police were searching Victoria Park this morning (June 11).

She told Bristol Live : "There were police swarming Victoria Park and an officer asked me if I'd seen anyone with a sledgehammer. I said no and asked if I needed to be worried - I was told to 'keep my wits about me'."

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said a man with a sledgehammer was not found - and there was no report he was acting in a "threatening manner".

She said: "Police were called at 7.30am today, Thursday 11 June, by a member of the public reporting seeing a man with a sledgehammer walking through Victoria Park, Bedminster.

"While there was no report of this man behaving in a threatening manner towards anyone, officers attended. They searched the area with no trace of him."
