Police swarm street as car hits railings and 'flips over' in Leeds crash

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Leeds after a car was spotted "flipped over" and on its side.

On Monday (May 2) a grey Mercedes was seen driving in Rodley Lane, Rodley, towards the roundabout around 6.30pm before reportedly colliding with railings at a passenger crossing next to the traffic lights. The car was seen to "flip" on its side.

Emergency services were called around 6.31pm. A fire engine, two ambulances and four police vehicles attended to the scene.

Paramedics were spotted carrying a stretcher out of the ambulance. Leeds Live do not have confirmation of any injuries sustained by the driver at this time.

The incident saw Rodley Road closed for a short period, and drivers reported the traffic was at gridlock. Drivers reported they waited in queues of traffic for over an hour before the road was reopened a short while later.

One driver told Leeds Live that residents who lived in and around Rodley Road were able to drive past the incident. The male witness said: "There was a massive accident at the roundabout and police closed the road. It was gridlocked.

"A police officer blocked the road off at the top of the bypass but he let some cars go past as we lived down there. But it turned out we couldn’t get past so we waited an hour before an officer came over and told us to take a U-turn.

"A Mercedes crashed into some railings traffic lights and it flipped and rolled onto its side. A fire engine attended, two ambulances and four police vehicles. I was heading towards Rodley from Horsforth at the time, it wasn’t nice to see at all."

Leeds Live have contacted West Yorkshire Police for further details of the incident.
