Police swarm downtown L.A. as LAPD facilitates meeting with 'convicted criminal'

Jan. 29--Part of downtown Los Angeles saw a heavy police presence Wednesday as Los Angeles police officers helped facilitate an evening meeting involving a convicted criminal, local law enforcement and a nonprofit group, LAPD officials confirmed.

In a statement issued Wednesday evening, the LAPD described the person as a "convicted criminal" but did not elaborate, saying only that the person "was part of an ongoing criminal enterprise."

The meeting was held with the LAPD, the nonprofit Young Presidents' Organization and local law enforcement officials from L.A. County, the LAPD said.

"The purpose was to learn how a transnational criminal enterprise was built, branded and marketed," the statement said. "Threats to our region remain terrorism and transnational criminal enterprises. It is the hope that we can learn and develop better strategies to counter these threats to our region."

Further details were not immediately available.

Earlier in the day, several police officers and vehicles were seen at a building near 6th and Spring streets.

Around noon, four unmarked sedans and an SUV pulled up in front of the building, with eight uniformed officers chatting on the sidewalk before going inside. About an hour later, a bomb squad vehicle briefly stopped outside.

Later in the afternoon, a half-dozen officers and unmarked vehicles were seen near a nearby alley.
