Police surround busy hospital as officers called to incident outside A&E

A hospital has been surrounded by police after officers swarmed on the area to deal with an 'incident' outside the A&E.

Police rushed to the Royal Liverpool Hospital after officers were called on Wednesday night.

A large area near the site on Prescot Street was cordoned off after reports of a man outside the hospital.

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly before 10.30pm before closing roads in the area.

Patients at the hospital are also being told to stay inside and away from the doors, Liverpool Echo reports.

In a statement a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said that they are dealing with a concern for safety.

The force said: "We can confirm that officers are at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital tonight, Wednesday 3 November.

"At around 10.20pm, a concern for the safety of a man outside the hospital was reported.

"Officers remain in the area and a road closure is in place on Prescot Street at both ends.

"Please avoid the area while we deal with the incident."

Echo reporter Abby Nicholson who was at the scene said: "A large cordon has been put in place surrounding the A57, a road full of shops and is home to blocks of student accommodation.

"Officers are asking people who live on the road to walk around the cordon, where they will be escorted to their doors by officers.

"All roads leading onto the A57 including Epworth Street, have been cordoned off by police."

Ambulances were seen arriving at the hospital through the cordon as normal as the incident was being dealt with.

One patient said: "None of the patients from the Royal are allowed out the front of the hospital.

"I can see all the police from the front of the royal.

"They’ve cordoned off the road from by the one stop shop up to by Tesco.

"The front doors of the main entrance to the hospital have been taped off so no one can go outside."
