Police superintendents: ‘I knew I could bring a different perspective’

I had worked for Croydon council for about 12 years, first in social care and housing, then as head of emergency planning, business and contingency, before moving back to the housing department as a strategic programme manager looking at welfare reform.

I saw the job description on the Guardian website and thought I would enjoy the role and add value to it; I knew I could bring a different perspective. I had a sleepless night thinking about it and managed to get the application in just before the deadline.

I wanted to stay in public service. I had worked quite closely with the police during the riots in Croydon and on other matters afterwards.

One of the things that attracts me about the police is the speed that they get things done. At the same time there is the challenge of learning a new business.

I had to work away from my home in West Sussex as my placement was in Yeovil with Avon and Somerset Constabulary for the first 12 months. I am now based in Brighton, but policing has become part of my DNA.

I bring to the job many of the skills that I gained from working for a local authority – leadership, communication and empathy. But as an outsider coming in, it is very important to be honest, genuine and have humility. I am keen that people around me will know that I will make decisions, but I want to use their experience to help make that decision.

Each day is very different. It sounds a cliche, but it is what I love about this job. The other thing I love is the people. On the whole, they are a really nice crowd and all share a sense of common purpose. It is like one big family. The experience has been life-changing.

I would say to anyone considering the job, to go out and speak to officers. You need to do it for the right reasons: that is, have a commitment to public service, enjoy working with people and want to make a difference.
