Police stunned by state of BMW involved in M4 crash that caused long delays on Monday morning

Police have issued a warning about making sure your car is roadworthy after a morning rush hour crash on the M4.

A white BMW was involved in the crash just before 8am near the Porthcawl turn off at junction 37.

One lane was blocked for a time and there were long delays in the area as emergency services safely moved the car to the hard shoulder. Emergency repairs had to be carried out in the area later on Monday morning.

Later South Wales Police Road Policing Team issued pictures of the car and said: "Its very important during the poor weather that you check your vehicle is safe."

They said that both rear tyres on the car had almost no tread and issued pictures of it.

A spokesman for the police said: "The driver was lucky to escape with just slight injuries. He has been reported for offences."

The law requires car tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre.

The tread must meet this minimum requirement across its complete circumference.

The RAC says: "Checking your legal tyre tread depth is one of the most important checks you can make on your car.

"Having worn tyres means the only contact patch between you and the road is past its best.

"You could almost call it an accident waiting to happen."
