Police stop van on M1 which was being driven at 40mph on flat tyre

A van driver was stopped by police on the M1 after attempting to reach Leeds at 40mph on a flat tyre.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit stopped the Mercedes Sprinter, which they referred to as the 'shed of the week', on the motorway overnight between Sunday, September 27 and September 28.

The force posted pictures of the van displaying two tyres worn down so much the inner cords were exposed, while another tyre was completely deflated.

Officers said: "Van travelling at less than 40mph on the motorway.

Exposed cords on the tyre of the Mercedes Sprinter (DRPU)

"Stopped to find two tyres with cord exposed and another one flat. Intended to drive to Leeds like this."

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said the van was prohibited from further movement and the driver received tickets.

Tyres should be at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band in the centre 3/4 of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre, although several vehicle manufacturers recommend a depth of no less than 3mm.

Exposed cords can also signify uneven tyre wear, which usually means the wheel alignment is out of balance.
