Police have stopped a clash of protesters at George Square.
Hundreds stationed themselves at the city centre landmark to 'protect' the Robert Peel statue as protesters made their way to the square to call for its removal.
The Press Association report counter-protesters ran towards a group who had overtaken a police escort and raced towards the square.
However, police officers were able to get themselves in between the two groups before they met.
Meanwhile, missiles have been thrown in the city centre as and eyewitnesses report police horses being attacked as officers appeal for calm.
Furthermore, police have been seen guarding the Duke of Wellington statue at Royal Exchange Square as eyewitnesses describe a 'major' police presence in Glasgow city centre.
PA report: "Police in Glasgow were able to avert a clash between people calling for the removal of a statue of Metropolitan Police founder Robert Peel and counter protesters.
"A group of those looking to see the statue removed were being escorted down North Hanover Street in the city when they overtook the police escort and began running towards George Square.
"Hundreds of counter-protesters began running towards the group before police were able to get in between the two.
"Missiles could be seen flying between the two groups as police - with their batons drawn - formed a line across the street.
"Those looking to see the statue removed were forced back up North Hanover Street by police.
"A police helicopter was deployed and could be seen flying over the city centre."
