Police stop Bristol walkers who drove a 100-mile round trip to Welsh beauty spot

Police caught 'large groups' from Bristol who had drove a 100-mile round trip to walk around a Welsh beauty spot.

Officers patrolling canyons in Blaenau Gwent spoke to a number of people in the area flouting coronavirus lockdown rules.

A force spokesperson said in some cases people were reminded of government rules and others, enforcement action was taken.

Police have the power to issue fines to people who are ignoring official guidance, which says everyone should remain at home and only exercise in locations near to where they live.

Residents leaving near to the canyons said they saw dozens of cars pour into the area during last week's warm weather.

A Gwent Police spokesperson told Wales Online : "Officers have dispersed large groups of people from the canyons on the British mountains in the Blaenau Gwent area, where people have travelled from Cardiff, Bristol, and Somerset.

“Gwent Police is aware that we have many spots of beautiful scenery across our force area, and our officers are regularly conducting patrols in these areas during the ongoing health crisis.

“Our approach involves engaging with the public, explaining the situation and encouraging them to follow the advice we have all received.

"However, if we consider that people are ignoring government advice, we will take enforcement action.

“It is now more important than ever that we all continue to play our part in keeping our communities safe and protecting the vulnerable and the NHS. Please stay at home to help save lives.”
