Police stopped 31 people who were not wearing seatbelts in the Pontypridd village of Rhydyfelin yesterday morning.
Three motorists were also issued with traffic fines, while one driver was dealt with for no licence and insurance and five people given suitable advice by officers from the South Wales Police Rhondda Cynon Taff team.
The morning's work was part of an educational exercise that was recounted in a post on the South Wales Police Rhondda Cynon Taff official Twitter account at 11:10pm this evening.
It read: "Partnership working in #Rhydyfelin this morning educating motorists. 31 people not wearing a seatbelt, 3 issued with Traffic Fines, 5 people given suitable advise and 1 person dealt with for no licence and insurance. @SWP_Roads @SWFRSRoadSafety @RCTCouncil #roadsafety "
The maximum fine for failing to wear a seatbelt is £500.
Aside from those who qualify for a medical exemption, the only times you do not have to wear a seatbelt is if you are:
- a driver who is reversing, or supervising a learner driver who is reversing
- in a vehicle being used for police, fire and rescue services
- a passenger in a trade vehicle and you’re investigating a fault
- driving a goods vehicle on deliveries that is travelling no more than 50 metres between stops
- a licensed taxi driver who is "plying for hire" or carrying passengers
