Police step up patrols and car stops in Scotland's ‘key areas’ amid coronavirus lockdown

Last night UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced strict lockdown measures across Britain.

Exceptions for leaving the house only include shopping for basic necessities, exercising once a day and providing care or helping a vulnerable person.

As a result Police Scotland have today announced that as a result of the new measures that they will be increasing patrols in 'key areas' to ensure that people aren't venturing outside unneccessarily.

As of yesterday, 499 Scots have tested positive for coronavirus, resulting in 14 deaths.

Reports from local traffic Facebook page 'Fife Jammer Locations' confirmed this morning that police in their area had been stopping cars to ask drivers their reason for travelling.

Chief Constable Iain Livingstone said: "We are fully behind the new measures announced by the UK and Scottish Governments to increase social distancing, and I urge and expect everyone to comply with them.

"We are carefully considering the implications in this very fast moving situation which presents the gravest of threats to the nation.

"In the meantime Police Scotland has a clear positive duty to both protect life and improve the safety and wellbeing of people across Scotland, while supporting the government and health agencies in our fight against the pandemic.

"Therefore until the new legislation is in place we will be increasing police patrols in key areas across the country to engage with and provide guidance to anyone in contravention of the measures.

As of yesterday, 335 Brits have died as a result of Coronavirus.
