Police step in as birds being shot in Nottinghamshire village

Police have released a message to the public after reports of birds being shot in a Nottinghamshire village.

The force say there are reports of pigeons, doves and blackbirds along with other species being shot in Selston over the last week.

Anyone who sees this happening has been urged to contact police if they see any offences taking place and those responsible are being warned that their behaviour "won't be tolerated".

A spokesperson for Ashfield Police said: "Over the last week we have received multiple calls from residents in Selston that wild birds are being shot.

"These birds have ranged from pigeons, doves and blackbirds along with other species of wild bird.

"Whilst most know that swans are protected in law the above species are also protected year-round with the exception being pigeons, as pigeons can be killed with reasonable methods providing that the person is in possession of a general license.

"Along with wildlife offences, there are also potential firearms offences involved within this sort of crime.

"These sorts of offences will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly.

"At this time we are asking that if anyone witnesses the above offences to ring 999 if the incident is in progress or ring 101 if the incident is no longer in progress."

If you don’t want to ring police, you can email the local force at ashfieldNPT@Nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk.

You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
